EN EL OCASO

Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–1880). Pintor estadounidense.
A Gorge in the Mountains, 1862.
Gastado corazón en un
tiempo extremado,
despójate de las redes del
bien y del mal;
ríe otra vez, corazón, en
el gris ocaso,
suspira otra vez,
corazón, en el rocío matinal.
Tu madre Eire es siempre
joven,
el rocío sigue brillando
y gris es el ocaso;
aunque tu esperanza te
abandona y el amor declina,
quemándose en el fuego de
una lengua calumniosa.
Ven, corazón, allí donde
las montañas se enciman:
porque allí la mística hermandad
del sol y la luna, la
hondonada y el bosque
el río y el arroyo hacen
su voluntad;
y Dios está de pie haciendo
sonar su cuerno solitario,
y el tiempo y el mundo en
fuga siempre están;
y el amor es menos gentil
que el gris ocaso,
y la esperanza menos querida
que el rocío matinal.

INTO THE TWILIGHT
Out-worn heart,
in a time out-worn,
Come clear of
the nets of wrong and right;
Laugh, heart,
again in the grey twilight,
Sigh, heart,
again in the dew of the morn.
Your mother
Eire is aways young,
Dew ever
shining and twilight grey;
Though hope
fall from you and love decay,
Burning in
fires of a slanderous tongue.
Come, heart,
where hill is heaped upon hill:
For there the
mystical brotherhood
Of sun and moon
and hollow and wood
And river and
stream work out their will;
And God stands
winding His lonely horn,
And time and
the world are ever in flight;
And love is
less kind than the grey twilight,
And hope is
less dear than the dew of the morn.
